| Description |
Main & Auburn as seen from Bridge St. This is one of the oldest photos of Baker City, probably taken in 1868.
The big building behind the cattle is the Baker City Hotel, known later at Railroad House. It was owned and operated by Joseph Lachner. A gas station occupies the site today.
The shed at the left is where the Hotel Baker now stands.
To the right of the shed is the home of J. M. Shepherd, publisher of the Daily Sagebrush, also know as the Bedrock Democrat. The Veterans building, earlier home of the YMCA, stands on the site today.
The building in the middle on the west side of Main St. is the Western Hotel owned by J. A. Reid and Fletcher. The Browning Building is located there today.
The above notes are summarized from information on the back of photo 1891.1.223. The note writer dated the photo as being taken in 1868. |
