Date photo taken: March 1st, 1898.
Note on back: "A small part of the Old Central School & the fence near this tall tree is where the scaffold was where they hung Armstrong." (Typed just as written.)
On January 22, 1904, Pleasant Armstrong, murderer of his girl friend, Minnie Ensminger, was hanged on these grounds. The enclosure and scaffold were on the south side (left) of the courthouse adjacent to the jail. The area is hidden by the covered outside staircase that led to the circuit courtroom on the second floor above the sheriff's office and jail. |
