business district. In the early 1900's Baker City's population was

10,000.
HISTORIC BACKGROUND:
Baker City was platted in 1864, became the county seat in 1868,
and was incorporated in 1874.
Its first mayor was former blacksmith turned hardware-store
owner Syrenus B. McCord, father of O. H. P. (Oliver Hazard Perry)
McCord, whose collection of historic photographs forms the
founding core of the library's collection. The other major source
of the library's photographs is Sumpter historian Brooks Hawley,
who upon his death bequeathed to the library his extensive
historic photograph collection plus many historic records.
