The railway was constructed to bring logs from the ponderosa forests bordering Sumpter Valley to the Oregon Lumber Co. mill in Baker City. In the early 1900's, the mill was reputed to be the largest in Oregon.

**1910. SVRy reached Prairie City in Grant County, 80 miles southwest of Baker City.
**1933. Passenger and baggage car service was discontinued. Thereafter passengers and mail were carried in the caboose.
