341 photographs (Transportation 275, Forest Industry 67). Most of the photographs are of Sumpter Valley Railway (SVRy). The railway was constructed to bring logs from the ponderosa forests bordering Sumpter Valley to the Oregon Lumber Co. mill in Baker City. In the early 1900's, the mill was reputed to be the largest in Oregon.
SVRy timeline: **8-18-1890. SVRy was incorporated by David Eccles of Utah and others. **October 1891. SVRy reached McEwen, a stage stop in Sumpter Valley, 22 miles southwest of Baker City **1896. SVRy reached Sumpter, 32 miles west of Baker City. **1910. SVRy reached Prairie City in Grant County, 80 miles southwest of Baker City. **1933. Passenger and baggage car service was discontinued. Thereafter passengers and mail were carried in the caboose. **1947. SVRy ceased all operations, sold its rolling stock, and removed its tracks.
