What is a Human Library event?

The Human Library is a place where readers can borrow human books and have open conversations about topics they usually do not have an opportunity to discuss. Each book is a volunteer who has unique experiences to share. Through dialog with readers, human books challenge stigmas and stereotypes in a safe, supportive environment. Book topics may include ethnicity, religion, physical/mental health, social status, occupation, LGBT+, immigration status, violence/abuse survivor, and past drug and alcohol addiction. The goal of our Human Library event is to challenge preconceived biases and encourage honest and respectful dialog.

Who can be a reader?

Anyone who is curious about and respectful of Human Library books. Readers can be individuals who meet one-on-one with a book or may be a small group of up to four family members or friends who meet together with a book.

What is expected of readers?

  • Due to the close-contact, conversational nature of this event, Readers, Books, and Human Library staff must either show proof of vaccination or booster shot for Covid-19 within the past six months or wear a mask or shield. Masks will be optional for vaccinated individuals.
  • The book loan will last 30 minutes. The book will give a five minute introduction and then engage in conversation with the reader for 25 minutes. Readers are encouraged to ask questions and actively participate in dialog.
  • Readers must be respectful and return the Human Library book in the same mental and physical condition it was loaned to you.
  • Readers accept that books have the right to limit the topics of conversation and may choose not to answer all questions. They may end the conversation if they feel the readers are behaving in an inappropriate or disrespectful manner.
  • Readers cannot record, photograph, or videotape the book.
  • Readers agree to fill out an evaluation after the conversation is finished.

How do I sign up?

Stop by or call the Baker County Library (541)523-6419. We will need your name and contact information (both email and phone number) for registration confirmation, reminders, and notifications about any event changes.
You may sign up for 1-3 specific time slots at the event.

  • 4:30 pm Session 1
  • 5:30 pm Session 2
  • 6:30 pm Session 3
What book will I get?
When you check in for your time slot the day of the event, you will draw a card with the name of the Human Library book and the title of their book. Priority for card drawing will follow registration order (The Reader first to sign up gets first pick of the cards).

How do I prepare for Human Library?

Put the event date and your time slots on your calendar with a reminder/alert and plan to arrive at the library a few minutes early. Prepare some questions to ask the Human Library books. Remember to thank each book for the loan and be ready to complete an evaluation afterwards.
