In place of our annual Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) celebration, Baker County Public Library invites the community to take part in a new, locally driven event: a Community Comics Day, to be held on May 2.

We recently learned that our comic bookshop partner, The Collector’s Outpost of Meridian, Idaho, will be unable to supply official Free Comic Book Day materials this year due to disruptions and communication challenges within the national comic distribution network. As a result, the library is unable to host the traditional FCBD giveaway.

In response, the library is turning to the community to help keep the spirit of the event alive.

Research increasingly shows that comic books and graphic novels play an important role in building literacy skills, especially for reluctant and struggling readers. The combination of visual storytelling and text helps improve comprehension, expand vocabulary, and encourage sustained reading. In recent decades, graphic novels have also evolved into a sophisticated literary format, exploring complex themes and diverse perspectives.

To meet growing demand, last year Baker County Library expanded its comic offerings by providing access to thousands of digital titles—including popular Japanese manga—through the Comics Plus platform. Available through the library’s website, Comics Plus allows patrons to browse curated collections for children, teens, and adults using their library card. Comics Plus offers unlimited access with no waitlists and, like other digital library resources, eliminates concerns about lost, damaged, or overdue materials.

Residents are encouraged to donate new or gently used comic books, manga, and graphic novels to Baker County Public Library now through May 1. These community-contributed materials will form the basis of the Comics Swap Meet, where attendees can browse and take home comics while supplies last.

On May 2, the traditional date of Free Comic Book Day, the library will display donated materials on tables throughout the building, creating a festive, discovery-focused experience similar to past events.

“While it’s disappointing not to have the official Free Comic Book Day materials this year,” said Library Director Perry Stokes, “this is a great opportunity to celebrate the creativity and generosity of our community. I’m excited to see the variety of comics people choose to share.”

The Comics Swap Meet is free and open to all ages. No donation is required to participate, though contributions are warmly welcomed.
